1992년 오늘 세상을 떠난 존 케이지는
침묵의 미학에 대한 작품으로 유명하다.
친구인 로버트 라우쉐버그의
완벽한 흰색 그림에서 영감을 받은 작품
'4분 33초' 로 유명하다.
케이지는 연주자에게 공연 시간(4분 33초)동안
연주하지 말라는 지시를 한다.
1952년 이 곡의 초연 무대에서
피아니스트 데이비드 튜더는
무대에 오르고,
의자에 앉고,
피아노 뚜껑을 열고,
아무것도 연주하지 않고,
정해진 시간이 지난 뒤
뚜껑을 닫았다.
3악장 각각 이를 반복했다.
그리고 무대를 떠났다.
케이지는 이를 통해 듣는 행위가
음악 연주의 근본적인 부분이라는
자신의 생각을 전달한 것이다.
'좋은 음악은 좋은 삶을 이끄는 역할을 한다' 고 믿었다.
또한 그는 다음과 같은 조언을 남겼다.
"모든 것을 보십시오.
눈을 감지 마십시오.
보고 있는 것에 호기심을 갖고
관심을 가지십시오."
John Cage,
who passed away on this day in 1992,
is famous for his work on
the aesthetics of silence.
He is best known for the piece 4′33″,
inspired by his friend Robert Rauschenberg’s
completely white paintings.
In this piece,
Cage instructs the performer not to play any music for
the entire duration of 4 minutes and 33 seconds.
At the premiere of the piece in 1952,
pianist David Tudor
walked onto the stage,
sat down,
opened the lid of the piano,
did not play a single note,
and after the allotted time had passed,
closed the lid.
He repeated this
for each of the three movements.
Then he left the stage.
Through this, Cage expressed his belief that
the act of listening is
a fundamental part of musical performance.
He believed that
“good music leads to a good life.”
He also left this advice:
“Look at everything.
Don’t close your eyes.
Have curiosity about what you see.
Be interested.”
