오늘은 이 음악을 작곡한
제오르제 에네스쿠의 생일이다.
에네스쿠의 음악은 조국인 루마니아 외에는
잘 알려지지 않았지만,
바이올리니스트, 피아니스트, 지휘자, 교사
그리고 창의적인 작곡가로 다재다능함을 보였다.
에네스쿠는 3살 때 들은
집시 민속 악단의 음악에 완전히 매료되었고,
5살 때는 이미 작곡가가 되고 싶어 했으며,
7살 때는 빈 음악원에 최연소로 입학했다.
이 후 파리로 가서
가브리엘 포레같은 거장에게 작곡을 배웠다.
1927년 모리스 라벨은 함께 연주할
새 바이올린 소나타를 가지고 에네스쿠를 찾아 갔다.
에네스쿠는 이 곡을 한 번 연주한 뒤
악보를 옆으로 치워놓았다.
곡 전체를 다 외운 것이다.

파블로 카잘스가 그를 가리켜
"모차르트 이래 가장 위대한 음악적 기적"
이라 부른 것도 충분히 이해가 간다.
세상을 떠나기 직전 에네스쿠는
한 친구에게 다음과 같이 말했다.
" 머릿속에 있는 음악 모두를
오선지에 옮겨 적는다면 수백년은 걸릴걸세."
철저한 완벽주의자였던 그는 겨우 33곡의 작품만을 남겼다.
그러나 그의 작품들은 유일무이하며
놀라울 정도로 풍부하고 다채로운
음악적 유산을 반영하고 있다.
그의 제자인 바이올리니스트 예후디 메뉴인은
에네쿠스를 이렇게 표현했다.
"루마니아와 헝가리의 초창기 민속 음악과 집시 음악의 뿌리가
서양 음악의 세련된 세계와 섞여 있는 존재같다."
1906년, 트럼펫을 위해 작곡된 오늘 음악은
에네쿠스의 모습을 잘 보여주는
환상적인 작품이다.
Today is the birthday of Georges Enescu
the composer of this piece.
Although Enescu’s music remains relatively
unknown outside his homeland of Romania
he was a remarkably versatile figure
— a violinist, pianist, conductor, teacher
and a profoundly creative composer.
At the age of three he was completely captivated
by the sound of a Gypsy folk band.By five, he already dreamed of becoming a composer.
At seven, he became the youngest student
ever admitted to the Vienna Conservatory.Later, he moved to Paris
where he studied composition
under great masters like Gabriel Fauré.
In 1927,
Maurice Ravel brought his new violin sonata
to Enescu hoping to perform it together.After playing through the piece once,
Enescu set the sheet music aside
—he had memorized the entire work in a single reading.Absolutely astonishing!
It’s no wonder Pablo Casals once called him
“The greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart.”
Shortly before his death, Enescu said to a friend:
“If I were to write down all the music in my head
it would take hundreds of years.”A relentless perfectionist
he left behind only 33 completed works.
And yet, those works are utterly unique,
rich and diverse beyond belief,
reflecting a musical legacy of incredible depth.
His student, violinist Yehudi Menuhin once described Enescu this way:
“He seemed like a being in
whom the roots of early Romanian and Hungarian folk and Gypsy music
were blended with the refined world of Western classical tradition.”
Composed in 1906 for trumpet,
today’s piece is a brilliant exampleof the magic Enescu embodied.
