엔리케 그라나도스는
스페인 민족주의 운동의 주역이었고,
그의 피아노 모음곡 <고예스카스>는
프란시스코 고야의 그림과 판화에서 영감을 받았다.
1901년 오늘,
그라나도스는 이렇게 기록했다.
"상상력 넘치지만 어려운 도역을 담은
곡을 쓰는 중" 이라고......
이듬 해 3월 첫 번째 모음곡이 완성되고
그가 직접 초연을 맡았다.
첫 곡은 '호타'라고 하는
스페인 북부 아라곤 지방에서 유래한
인기있는 노래와 춤의 형식이다.
<고예스카스>는 큰 성공을 거두었고
훗날 파리 오페라 극장이
이 곡의 오페라 버전을 의뢰하기까지 했다.
전쟁으로 인해
오페라는 유럽이 아닌
뉴욕의 메트로폴리탄에서 초연되었다.
1916년 3월,
그라나도스 부부가 해협을 가로질러
스페인으로 돌아오던 중
독일 잠수함이 이들이 타고 있던
서식스 여객선에 어뢰를 발사했다.
바다에 빠진 그라나도스는
가까스로 구명정에 올라탔지만,
아내를 구하기 위해 물 속으로 뛰어들었다.
그라나도스 부부는
여섯 자녀를 남긴 채 세상을 떠났다.
Enrique Granados was a key figure
in the Spanish nationalist movement.
His piano suite <Goyescas> was inspired
by the paintings and etchings of Francisco Goya.
On this day in 1901,
Granados wrote in his journal that he was
“working on a piece full of imagination
but difficult passages.”
By March of the following year
the first part of the suite was completed
and he premiered it himself.
The first piece is called Jota.
It's a popular song and dance
form that originated
in the Aragón region of northern Spain.
Goyescas was a great success
and the Paris Opera eventually commissioned
Granados to create
an opera version of the suite.
Due to the war, however,
the opera premiered not in Europe
but at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
In March 1916,
while returning to Spain across the English Channel,
Granados and his wife were aboard the SS Sussex,
which was torpedoed by a German U-boat.
Granados initially survived and managed
to climb into a lifeboat
but when he saw his wife struggling in the water,
he jumped back in to save her.
Both drowned
leaving behind six children.
