영국아카데미 음악상을 수상한
아이슬란드 음악가 올라퍼 아르날즈는
사람들이 생각하는
평범한 클래식 작곡가가 아니다.
그는
클래식, 일레트로닉, 앰비언트 미니멀리스트, 팝 뮤직 등의
분쟁 지대에서 놀라운 모험을 즐기고
장르를 지칭하는 딱지를 없애버린
소수의 음악가 중 한 사람이다.
하지만 클래식 음악은
그의 작업에서 핵심이었다.
그리고 쇼팽에 대한 그의 사랑과 존경은
할머니와의 관계까지 거슬러 올라간다.
헤비메탈을 즐기던 어린시절 아르날즈는
할머니 집을 갈 때마다 함께 앉아
쇼팽의 음악을 들었다.
그는 할머니가 세상을 떠난 날에도
그곳에 있었다.
"저는 할머니와 함께 앉아
쇼팽의 소나타를 들었죠.
그리고 저는 할머니에게
작별 키스를 하고
그 자리를 떠났습니다.
할머니는 몇 시간 뒤에
숨을 거두셨죠."
2015년 그는 쇼팽이라는 작곡가에 대한
자신의 사랑을
무언가 독특한 방식으로 표현했다.
바로 쇼팽 프로젝트라고하는
획기적인 장르 파괴 계획이었다.
그는 쇼팽의 작품 몇 곡을
피아노, 현악 5중주, 신디사이저 편성으로 재조직해
자신만의 음악과 결합했다.
이 작업은
독일계 일본인 피아니스트
앨리스 사라 오트와의
협업으로 이루어졌다.
레이캬비크에서 빈티지 녹음 장비를 사용해
다양한 종류의 피아노로 녹음된 이 음반은
천상의 아름다움을 담은 음향 세계를 들려준다.
야상곡 원곡에
새롭고 명상적인 빛을 비추는 음악이다.
Ólafur Arnalds, the Icelandic musician
who won a British Academy Award for his music,
is far from what most people imagine
when they think of a traditional classical composer.
He is one of the few artists
who explores the borderlands between
classical, electronic, ambient minimalism, and pop music
— tearing down genre labels
and embracing adventurous sonic experimentation.
Yet, classical music has always been
at the heart of his work.
His deep love and respect for Chopin trace back to
his relationship with his grandmother.
As a child who enjoyed heavy metal,
Arnalds would often sit with his grandmother
and listen to Chopin
whenever he visited her house.
He was there on the day she passed away.
“I sat with my grandmother listening to Chopin’s sonatas.”
“Then I kissed her goodbye and left.
She passed away just a few hours later.”
In 2015, Arnalds expressed
his affection for the composer in a truly unique way:
a groundbreaking genre-defying project
called The Chopin Project.
He reimagined several of Chopin’s pieces,
rearranging them for piano, string quintet, and synthesizer,
blending them with his own music.
The project was a collaboration
with German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott.Recorded in Reykjavík using vintage equipment
and a variety of pianos,
the album offers a sound world of ethereal beauty
— a meditative and illuminating reinterpretation
of Chopin’s nocturnes.
