오스트리아에서 태어난
에리히 볼프강 코른골트는
구스타프 말러가 주목할 만큼
작곡 실력이 뛰어났다.

그는 알렉산더 폰 챔렌스키에게 배웠고,
열한 살 때 첫 번째 발레음악을 작곡했다.

1934년 나치를 피해 캘리포니아에 정착해
그때부터 본격적으로 영화 음악을 작곡하며
할리우드 영화 음악의 대부가 되었다.

코른골트는 16편이 넘는 
할리우드 영화의 음악을 맡았고,
이 과정에서 몇 개의 오스카와
다른 주요한 상을 받았다.

그는 오페라 대본을 다루듯 
영화시나리오에 접근했다.
그의 클래식 작품 중 많은 곡들이
영화를 방불케 하는 
신비로운 분위기를 자아낸다.
특히 바이올린 협주곡이 그렇다.

이 곡은 1930년대 후반에 작곡되었고,
이 시기는 그가 자신의 
가장 훌륭한 영화 음악 중 몇 편을 
작곡하던 때와 같다.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold born in Austria,

was such a prodigious composer
that Gustav Mahler himself took
notice of his talent.

 

He studied under Alexander von Zemlinsky

and by the age of eleven
he had composed his first ballet.

 

In 1934, fleeing the rise of Nazism,

Korngold settled in California,

where he began composing film scores in earnest
— eventually becoming one of the founding fathers
of Hollywood film music.

 

Korngold wrote music for over sixteen Hollywood films,

earning several Academy Awards
and other major accolades along the way.

 

He approached film scripts the same way
he would approach opera librettos,

and many of his concert works evoke the cinematic
magical atmosphere

found in his scores for the screen
—particularly his Violin Concerto.

 

This concerto was composed in the late 1930s,

a period during which Korngold was also writing

some of his most celebrated and masterful film scores.
