1693년, 여성이 작곡한
첫 번째 기악 소나타 모음곡이
출판되었다.

이 여성은 오늘 태어난
이사벨라 레오나르다라는
우르술라회 수녀였다.

레오나르다는 10대 시절
이탈리아 노바라에 있는
성녀 우르술라 수녀원에 입회했다.

바쁜 중에도 200곡 이상의 음악을 작곡했다.

레오나르다가 세상을 떠나고 20년이 지난 뒤,
어느 저명한 프랑스 평론가가
"비할 데 없이 찬란한 이 작곡가의 작품은
하나같이 아름답고 우아하고 훌륭한 동시에  
지적이고 현명하다.
작품 전체를 접할 수 없어 아쉬울 뿐이다."
라고 했다.

In 1693,
the first collection of instrumental sonatas composed
by a woman was published.

That woman was Isabella Leonarda
 a nun of the Ursuline order
—born on this very day.

Leonarda entered
the Convent of Saint Ursula in Novara,
Italy, as a teenager.

Despite her many responsibilities
she composed more than 200 pieces of music.

Twenty years after her death
a prominent French critic wrote:

“The works of this
incomparable and brilliant
composer are all beautiful, elegant and excellent
—intelligent and wise at the same time.
My only regret is
that I cannot access
her complete oeuvre.”
