It was Mozart who came up
with this unique combination—the piano quartet.
He composed two piano quartets
: one in E-flat major and one in G minor.
This idea was later taken up
by Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms, and Fauré.
Dvořák attempted this instrumentation
for the first time in 1880,
but nearly a decade passed
before he returned to it.
It wasn’t until pressure
from the publisher Simrock
that he reluctantly began composing again.
In the summer of 1889,
Dvořák devoted himself to this work
and fortunately, the process went smoothly.
This was the peak of his career.
