to a Sierra Leonean father
and an English mother.

 

Although he never visited Africa
he was captivated
by the rhythms and melodies
of the continent
where his father was born.

 

About his work, he wrote:

“What Brahms did for Hungarian folk music,

what Dvořák did for Bohemian music,

what Grieg did for Norwegian music
—

I have tried
to do through
these Negro melodies.”
