리스트는
이 피아노 소나타를
로베르트 슈만에게 헌정했다.
하지만 슈만은 이곡을 알 수 없었다.
평생 동안 앓았던 정신질환으로
이미 엔데니히 정신 병원에
입원한 상태였기 때문이다.

이 소나타의 첫 반응은 끔찍했다.
끊기지 않고 연주되는
단일악장 구조를 지닌 이 작품은,
참을 수 없을 정도로
과감하고 새로운 음악으로 여겨졌다.

이 곡에서 리스트는
소나타 속에 소나타를 삽입한 것 같은
형식을 취하면서 사람들의 기대를 짓밟았다. 
유감스럽게도 클라라 슈만조차도
이 곡을 끔찍하다고 말했다고 한다.

엄청난 영향력을 지닌
빈의 평론가 에두라르트 한슬리크는
이 곡에 대해 다음과 같이 평했다.
"이 곡을 듣고
아름답다고 생각하는 사람은
구제불능이다."

오늘날
이 극적이고 신비로운 소나타는 
전 세계 피아니스트와 청중들에게 사랑받고 있고
리스트가 남긴 최고의 작품으로
인정받고 있다.

Liszt dedicated
this piano sonata to Robert Schumann.
However, Schumann was
never able to hear or understand the piece
as he had already been committed to
the mental asylum in Endenich due to
the mental illness that had afflicted
him throughout his life.

The initial reaction to the sonata was terrible.
Structured as a single,
uninterrupted movement,
the piece was considered unbearably bold
and radically new at the time.

 

In this work,
Liszt shattered expectations by adopting a
form that seemed
to embed a sonata within a sonata.
Unfortunately,
even Clara Schumann reportedly
found the piece appalling.

 

Eduard Hanslick
a highly influential critic in Vienna
had this to say about the sonata:
“Anyone who finds this piece beautiful is beyond help.”

 

Today,
this dramatic and mysterious sonata is
cherished by pianists and audiences around the world
and is recognized as
one of Liszt’s greatest masterpieces.
