리하르트 슈트라우스는 84세였고
인생의 마지막을 향하고 있었다.
이 곡은 <네 개의 마지막 노래> 중 한 곡이다.

이 작품집의 네 곡 모두 죽음을 주제로 다루고 있다.
하지만 이들 노래는 빛이 꺼져간다는 사실에 분노하기보다는
솟아오르는 선율선을 통해 화해의 신호 속에서
운명을 고요히 수용하는 분위기를 자아낸다.

슈트라우스는 이 <네 개의 마지막 노래>를
한 소프라노를 위해 작곡했다는 사실이 감동적이다.
그 주인공은 바로 아내 파울리네 드 아나다.
슈트라우스는 아내와 행복한 결혼 생활을 오랫동안 이어갔다.

이 작품에는 사랑스러운 호른 파트도 포함되어 있다.
작곡가가 의식을 했든 안 했든 호른 연주자였던 아버지 프란츠가
자신의 삶에 중요한 영향을 끼쳤다는 사실을
긍정하는 것으로 보인다.

In 1948, when Richard Strauss composed this piece,
he was 84 years old and approaching the end of his life.

This song is one of the Four Last Songs
<Vier letzte Lieder>.

 

Each of the four songs in this collection deals
with the theme of death.

Yet rather than expressing rage
at the fading of the light,

they evoke an atmosphere of peaceful acceptance—

a quiet reconciliation with fate,
conveyed through soaring melodic lines.

 

Strauss was deeply moved by the idea
of composing these Four Last Songs

for a single soprano.

That soprano was none other than his wife,
Pauline de Ahna.

Strauss shared a long and happy marriage with her.

 

The piece also includes a tender horn part.

Whether consciously or not,
it seems to acknowledge the profound influence

his father Franz,
a horn player, had on his life.

Could there be a more beautiful farewell uttered in music?

 

Stop your hands, all actions cease.

Forget, you stars, all thoughts must fade.

My every sense will soon be still—

And my soul, unseen by any eye,

Will drift with wings unfurled and free.
