어제는 리하르트 슈트라우스가
80대 시절에 작곡한 경이로운 작품을 소개했다.
오늘은 길고 화려했던 삶의 끝자락을 향하는
또 다른 작곡가의 작품을 들어보자.

이 곡은 '노인'의 음악처럼 들리지 않는다.

서정적인 시작 부분부터 고전주의 시대에 귀를 기울이는 듯,
산뜻하고 우아한 형식미가 넘치는 곡이다.

목관 악기의 독주 레퍼토리가
현악기에 비해 턱없이 부족하다는 사실에 주목한
카미유 생상스는 말년에
오보에, 클라리넷, 바순, 플루트, 잉글리시 호른을 위한 소나타를 만들어
이 악기의 연주자들에게 선사하는 데 심혈을 기울였다.

안타깝게도 그는 이 프로젝트를 마무리하지 못했다.
그가 써내는 곡이 어떤 모습일지 기대했을
플루트와 잉글리시 호른 연주자들을 뒤로하고
세상을 떠났다. 

생상스는 이 곡을 통해
클라리넷에게 마치 명함을 조용히 건네는 듯
이 악기를 20세기로 초대한다.

보석같은 작품이다.

Yesterday,
we explored a remarkable work
by Richard Strauss,
composed in his eighties.

Today,
let us listen to a piece by another composer
at the twilight of his long and brilliant life.

This music does not sound like
it was written by an old man.

From its lyrical opening,
it seems to look back toward the Classical era,
filled with elegance and clarity of form.

Noting the severe lack
of solo repertoire for woodwind instruments
compared to strings,

Camille Saint-Saëns devoted
his later years to writing sonatas
for the oboe, clarinet, bassoon, flute, and English horn—
a heartfelt gift to wind players.

Sadly, he was unable to complete the project.

Flute and English horn players,
who may have eagerly awaited his next works,
were left with only a promise,
as Saint-Saëns passed away
before finishing the cycle.

With this sonata,
he seems to quietly hand
his calling card to the clarinet—
gently ushering the instrument
into the 20th century.

It's a jewel of a piece.
