가장 위대했던 잉글랜드의 작곡가.
그는 격동기였던 시기,
완전히 다른 종교를 믿었던 
네 명의 군주를 차례로 섬겼다.
목이 잘리는 일 없이 말이다.

다시 말해
종교 개혁이 잉글랜드 교회 음악에
어떤 영향을 끼쳤는지 궁금하다면
토마스 텔리스야말로 
그 의문을 해결할 적임자다.

그는 수많은 작품을 작곡한 40년이라는 시간동안,
교회의 공격을 피하면서 새로 등극한 군주가
자신을 충성스러운 음악가라고 신뢰할 수 있도록
곡의 양식, 언어, 음악적 접근 방식을
숨 막힐 정도로 유려하고 신속하게 바꾸어 나갔다.

처음에는 헨리8세가 로마 가톨릭과 결별한 후인
1532년과 1534년 사이에 텔리스가 작곡한 작품은
라틴어로 된 성공회 음악이었다.

1547년 헨리가 사망하고
아홉 살 아들 에드워드가 왕위에 오르자,
갑자기 교회 미사곡에
영어 가사를 써야 한다는 명이 떨어졌다.
새로운 합창 음악은
각 음절에 분명하고 뚜렷한 음표가 있어야 한다는
지시도 내려왔다.

1553년 메리 여왕이 로마 가톨릭으로 돌아가자 
텔리스는 다시 한번
라틴어로 된 가톨릭 음악을 작곡하기 시작했다.

메리의 이복자매인 엘리자베스 1세가
왕좌에 올랐을 때에는
또 다시 영어 가사로 복귀했다.

텔리스의 종료적 신념과 작품에 대한

Thomas Tallis served four monarchs

Over the course of a 40-year career in which
he composed a vast body of work,

Tallis navigated the dangerous tides of religious change
with extraordinary grace and agility.

He adapted his musical style, language, and approach

so seamlessly and swiftly that each new ruler could trust him
as a loyal servant of the crown.

 

After Henry VIII broke
with the Roman Catholic Church,

Tallis’s earliest known works
from around 1532–1534 were composed in Latin,

but aligned with the new Anglican ideals.

 

When Henry died
in 1547 and his nine-year-old son Edward took the throne,

a dramatic shift occurred:

church music now had to use English texts,

and new directives required
that every syllable be clearly set to music
—clarity and simplicity became essential.

 

In 1553,
when Queen Mary restored Roman Catholicism,

Tallis once again turned
to composing sacred works in Latin.

 

Then,
when Mary’s half-sister Elizabeth
I ascended the throne,

he returned once more to English texts.

 

As for Tallis’s own religious beliefs
or personal thoughts about his work,

those remain a mystery.

But the music
he left behind is among the greatest treasures
in classical history,

continuing to inspire
and influence composers even today.
