오늘은 자메이카의 독립기념일로,
자메이카에서 가장 훌륭한 음악가의 음악을 들어보자.
킹스턴에서 태어난 엘리노어 알베르가는
겨우 다섯 살의 나이에 피아니스트가 되겠다는 결심을 했고,
영국으로 건너가 왕림음악원에서 공부했다.

로알드 달의 패러디 동화 <백만장자가 된 백설공주>의 사운드트랙부터
클래식 음악계의 가장 큰 행사인 '프롬 콘서트의 마지막 밤'까지,
알베르가의 작품을 어디서나 들을 수 있게 되었다.

알베르가의 음악은 여러 음악의 영향을 받았기 때문에
스타일을 정확히 꼭 집어 말하기가 어렵다.
아프리카와 카리브해의 전통을
다채로운 색조와 리듬에 담아 반영한 음악도 있고,
20세기 유럽의 영향이 더 짙은 곡도 있다.

오늘 소개하는 이 곡은,
스코틀랜드의 첼리스트 로버트 어빈이
유니세프 웹사이트의 한 게시물을 읽으면서 시작되었다.

폭력으로 5분마다,
영양실조로 15초마다 아이들이 죽고,
열악한 보건 문제로 5세 미만 아이들 17,000명이 
매일 죽는다는 글이었다.

'첼로를 연주한다고 아이들의 고통이 없어지는 것은 아니다'
라는 사실을 깨달은 어빈은,
연주회를 여는 것 보다 더 유용한 무언가를 하고 싶었다.

그는 알베르가를 포함한 여러 현대 작곡가들에게
<노래와 자장가>
라는 음반에 수록할 작품을 요청했다.
수익금 전액은 유니세프에 기부되었다.

알베르가는
자메이카의 전통 자장가를 편곡해
이 캠페인에 참가했다.

Today is Jamaica’s Independence Day,
so let’s listen to the music of one
of Jamaica’s greatest musicians.

Eleanor Alberga,born in Kingston,
decided to become a pianist at the young age of five,
and later moved to the UK
to study at the Royal Academy of Music.

From the soundtrack of Roald Dahl’s parody fairy tale
<Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Become Millionaires>

to The Last Night of the Proms,
one of the biggest events in the classical music world,
Alberga’s works can now be heard far and wide.

Her music is influenced by many traditions,
so it’s difficult to define a single style.
Some pieces reflect African and Caribbean heritage
with vibrant colors and rhythms,
while others show a stronger influence
from 20th-century European music.

The piece we’re introducing today began
when Scottish cellist Robert Irvine
read a post on the UNICEF website.

It said that a child dies from violence every 5 minutes,
from malnutrition every 15 seconds,
and that 17,000 children under the age of five
die every day due to poor healthcare.

Realizing that
“playing the cello won’t stop children’s suffering,”
Irvine wanted to do something more meaningful
than just hold a concert.

He reached out to several contemporary composers,
including Alberga,
to contribute works for an album titled
<Songs and Lullabies>.

All proceeds from the album were donated to UNICEF.

Alberga took part in the campaign
by arranging a traditional Jamaican lullaby.
