알렉산드르 글라주노프의 생일을 맞아
그의 바이올린 협주곡을 소개한다.

리스트에게서 영감을 받은 이 곡은
전통적인 3악장 협주곡의 구조를 탈피한
자유로운 단일악장 형식으로,
흘러넘치는 선율과 감정으로
가득 차 있다.

글라주노프는 작곡가였을 뿐만 아니라
저명한 러시아의 지휘자, 음악교수, 행정가이기도 했다.

정치적으로나 문화적으로
상당히 격동적인 시대를 살었던 그는
서로 대립하던 민족주의와 세계시민주의 세력을
조화시키기 위해 평화적으로 노력했고,

드미트리 쇼스타코비치등이 학생으로 있던 시기에
상트페테르부르크 음악원의 원장으로 재직하면서
러시아 음악계에서 실용주의와 온건성을
대표하는 인물로 널리 존경받았다.

그는
알렉산드르 보로딘의 풍부한 시적 정감,
림스키코르사코프의 비르투오시티,
그리고
차이콥스키의 극적인 서정성에서 
영감을 받았다.

이후 세대의 전위주의자들은 
그를 구식이라고 보기도 했지만,
꾸준한 영향을 끼친 인물이라는 사실만은
모두들 인정했다.

글라주노프는 성격과 작품 모두에 있어서
온건한 모습을 보여주면서도
사진 같은 기억력, 초견 실력,
관현악법과 선율 구사의 뛰어난 재능으로
당시 많은 명성을 얻었다.

이런 측면은
이 협주곡의 아름다운 중간부에서 
특히 매력적으로 드러난다.

In celebration of Alexander Glazunov’s birthday,
we present his Violin Concerto.

 

Inspired by Liszt, this concerto breaks away
from the traditional three-movement structure,
embracing a free-form single-movement design filled
with overflowing melodies and deep emotion.

 

Glazunov was not only a composer
but also a distinguished Russian conductor,
music professor, and administrator.

 

Living through a politically and culturally turbulent era,
he strove for harmony between the opposing forces
of nationalism and cosmopolitanism.

 

As director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory
—during the time when Dmitri Shostakovich was a student
—he was widely respected as a representative
of pragmatism and moderation
in Russian musical life.

 

He drew inspiration from
the poetic richness of Alexander Borodin,
the virtuosity of Rimsky-Korsakov,
and the dramatic lyricism of Tchaikovsky.

 

Though later generations of avant-garde musicians
sometimes saw him as old-fashioned,
no one denied the lasting influence
he had on Russian music.

 

Both in personality and in his compositions,
Glazunov displayed a moderate, balanced character.
Yet he was widely acclaimed
for his photographic memory,
exceptional sight-reading,
and his mastery of orchestration and melody.

 

These qualities are especially evident
—and captivating
—in the concerto’s beautiful central section.
