1869년 오늘,
오스트리아의 후기 낭만주의 작곡가
안톤 브루크너는
무반주 4성(소프라노, 알토, 테너, 베이스) 합창을 위한 
모테트를 작곡했다.

브루크너는 이 곡을 작곡하기 얼마 전
빈으로 거주지를 옮겼지만,
이 작품은 오스트리아 린츠에 있는 대성당의
봉헌당 헌납식을 위해 작곡된 것이다.

독실한 신앙과 절망적인 자기 불신에 빠져 있던 브루크너는
르네상스 대위법의 구조적 복잡함에 매료되었다.

3분의 연주 시간동안 이 모테트는
음악에 있어서 인간 목소리의 결합보다
더 강력한 것은 없다고 
강하게 주장하는 듯하다.

On this day in 1869,

Austrian late-Romantic composer
Anton Bruckner composed
a motet for unaccompanied
four-part choir (soprano, alto, tenor, bass).

 

Although Bruckner had recently moved to Vienna,

this work was written for the dedication ceremony
of the cathedral in Linz, Austria.

 

Deeply devout and plagued by crippling self-doubt,

Bruckner was captivated by the structural complexity
of Renaissance counterpoint.

 

Over the course of just three minutes,

this motet seems to assert with great conviction

that there is nothing more powerful in music

than the union of human voices.
