알마 말러는
구스타프 말러의 아내이다.
정확히 말하자면
구스타프는 알마의 첫 번째 남편이다.

1902년 열아홉 살 연상이었던
말러와 결혼하기 전,
알마는 재능 있는 가곡 작곡가였다.
하지만 이들의 결혼 조건 중에는
'작곡가가 되려는 시도를 그만두어야 한다'
는 조항도 있었다.

구스타프는 알마에게
"나의 음악이 너의 음악이다."
라고 말하며,
작곡에 대한 시도를 멈추게 하였다.
처음에는 구스타프의 음악을 도우면서
사랑스러운 아내로 헌신했지만,
행복은 오래가지 못했다.

몇 해 지나지 않아 말러 부부는
아이를 잃었고, 알마는 우울증에 걸렸다.
얼마 뒤 알마는
건축가이자 바우하우스의 창립자인
발터 그로피우스와 불륜의 관계를 맺기 시작했다.

구스타프 말러가 세상을 떠난 뒤
그로피우스와 결혼했고,
훗날에는 소설가 프란츠 베르펠의 아내,
또, 오스카어 코코슈카를 비롯한
많은 이들의 뮤즈이기도 했다.

지그문트 프로이트는 
알마가 작곡가 활동을 중단하면서
예술적 표현이 억눌렸기 때문에
불륜을 저질렀다고 말했다.

이에 당황한 말러는
결국 알마의 음악적 야망을 진지하게 받아들기로 하고

알마의 작품을 칭찬하고
노래 여러 곡을 수정하고 가필도 해주었다.
그중에는 알마가 쳄린스키에게 배우던 시절에 작곡한
오늘의 음악 <Laue Sommernacht> 도 포함되어 있다.

마침내 알마의 노래 몇 곡이 출판되었지만
너무 늦은 일이었다.
알마는 다시는 작곡에 제대로 손을 대지 않았고
스무곡도 안되는 작품만을 남겼다.

Alma Mahler was the wife of Gustav Mahler.

To be more precise
Gustav was Alma’s first husband.

 

Before marrying Mahler in 1902
— a man 19 years her senior —

Alma was a talented composer of art songs.

However,
one of the conditions of their marriage

was that she give up any attempt
to pursue a career as a composer.

 

Gustav told Alma,

“My music is your music,”

effectively discouraging
her from composing.

At first,
Alma devoted herself
to helping Gustav with his work,

playing the role of the loving and supportive wife.

But the happiness did not last long.

 

A few years later, the Mahlers lost a child,

and Alma fell into depression.

Not long after,
she began an affair with architect

Walter Gropius — the future founder of
the Bauhaus movement.

 

After Gustav Mahler passed away,

Alma married Gropius.

Later, she became the wife of novelist Franz Werfel,

and served as a muse to many

including the painter Oskar Kokoschka.

 

Sigmund Freud once said

that Alma’s suppressed desire for artistic expression,

caused by giving up her composing,

led her to infidelity.

 

Disturbed by this interpretation,

Mahler eventually decided to take
Alma’s musical ambitions seriously.

 

He began to praise her compositions,

revised and edited several of her songs
including <Laue Sommernacht>

which she had written during her studies
with Alexander von Zemlinsky.

 

Some of Alma’s songs were finally published,

but it was too late.

She never seriously returned to composing,

leaving behind fewer than twenty works.
