영국을 대표하는 작곡가로 사랑받는 에드워드 엘가.
작곡 시기가 제 1차 세계대전 발발 직전으로
<탄식>의 초연 무대는
1914년 오늘, 런던 퀸즈 홀에서 열렸다.

현악 합주, 하프, 하모늄을 위한 곡으로 작곡되었으며
이 후 다양한 편곡으로 연주되고 있다.
하프와 하모늄이 더하는 신비로운 분위기는 
영적인 깊이를 더한다.

이 곡은 짧지만 감정적으로 매우 깊은 곡이다.
처음에는 너무나도 유명한 '사랑의 인사'와
짝을 이루는 낭만적인 소품을 계획하지만,
결과적으로 깊은 슬픔과 고뇌,
비극적인 감정을 담은 곡으로 변화한다.

초연 무대가 있기 6주 전
프란츠 페르디난트 대공이 암살되었고,
11일 전에는
빅벤의 자정 종소리와 함께
선전포고가 있었다.
전쟁은
크리스마스전에 모두 끝날 것이라 생각했지만,
제 1차 세계대전이 발발했다.

전쟁의 암운과 인간 존재의 고통, 내면의 불안을
음악적으로 표현하려 했다.

느리고 깊은 선율은
감정을 억누른 듯
절제된 표현과 내면의 울림,
헤어진 이와의 이별 같은
서정성을 그려낸다.

Edward Elgar,
one of Britain’s most beloved and representative composers,
premiered his work Sospiri on
this day in 1914 at Queen’s Hall in London
—just before the outbreak of World War I.

Originally written for
string orchestra, harp, and harmonium,
the piece has since been performed
in various arrangements.
The harp and harmonium contribute
a mysterious atmosphere,
adding a spiritual depth to the music.

Though short in duration,
Sospiri is emotionally profound.
Elgar initially intended
it as a romantic companion piece to
his famous Salut d’Amour,
but it ultimately evolved
into something much darker
—filled with sorrow, anguish, and a sense of tragedy.

Just six weeks before the premiere
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.
Eleven days prior
the chimes of Big Ben marked midnight
as Britain declared war.
While many believed the war would be over by Christmas
the First World War had truly begun.

In Sospiri,
Elgar sought to capture
the looming shadow of war
the suffering of humanity
and the unrest of the soul.

Its slow profound melody is marked by restraint
—an emotional undercurrent barely held back.
With lyrical beauty,
it evokes a sense of inner turmoil,
quiet grief, and the sorrow
of parting from a loved one.
