was a Mexican composer, conductor, viol player,

and teacher who lived during the Baroque era.

 

While grounded
in the European Baroque tradition,

he incorporated elements
of indigenous American folk music

and Afro-Caribbean rhythms
into his compositions.

 

Today marks the anniversary
of the Slavery Abolition Act

receiving royal assent in Britain
in the year 1833.
